Note that ten elective courses are listed below: the student takes five to obtain 15 credits. Several Special Topics (NAN 598) Courses are offered each Fall and Spring semester that may be of interest, but each course may not be offered every year. Please consult Course Offerings (under the Student tab) for more options.

Fall Courses

CHM 520 Chemical Biology (3 credits, elective, fall semester)Application of chemical tools toward the study biological problems: topics range from traditional molecular biology and biochemistry to state-of-the-art techniques in genomics and proteomics. Particular emphasis will be placed on modern concepts in enzymology.
NAN/PHY 542 Topics in Biophysics (3 credits, elective, fall semester)Overview of modern biology, length scales: emphasizes molecular and cellular biology. Nonequilibrium systems: compare and contrast stochastic processes in biological and physical systems.
NAN/BCH 564 Bio-Nano technology (3 credits, fall semester)The use of biomolecules, bioelectronics, and biomedicine for applications in nanotechnology.*NAN 571 Quantum Physics is not listed here. NAN/BCH 564 will be useful for Option 3 students, see Comment below
NAN 591 Professional & Business Seminar (4 credits total; 2 credits fall, 2 credits spring)Students discuss their elective experiences with their peers, guided by Professional Science Master faculty, visiting speakers and industrialists, including Advisory Board members. Preparation for NAN 593 Applied Project, and study of professional and business modules.
NAN/CHM 598 Nucleic Acids (3 credits, elective, fall semester)Nucleic Acids: DNA, RNA and current topics from the perspective of biological chemistry. This course is given in alternate years with Peptides & Proteins, which was last given in fall 2015.
BME 598 Nanoscale Science & Detection Methods (3 credits, elective, fall semester)Nanotechnology in biomedical molecular imaging and diagnostics, with an emphasis on emerging methods. Many topics including nanoparticle design; bioconjugate probes; biological/biomimetic nanostructures, etc (This course requires instructor approval).
NAN 593 Applied Project (6 credits total; 3 credits spring, 3 credits summer or fall semester)(Not for first semester) Preparation of an Applied Project supervised by a faculty member or workplace advisor. The project will be defended to the student's 3-person committee, and to a wider group at a Capstone Conference.

NAN 505 Nanoscience and Society (2 credits, spring semester)Integrates nanoscience, nanotechnology and societal issues, taught by faculty and research staff from the Center for Nanotechnology in Society. NAN 505 and 506 are alternatives, but students can take both.
NAN 506 Innovation and IP Management (2 credits, first summer session)Intellectual property management in the context of innovation and technology transfer, taught by faculty specializing in intellectual property issues. NAN 505 and 506 are alternatives, but students can take both.
NAN 544 Introduction to Nanoscience (3 credits, elective, spring semester)This course gives a broad introduction to Nanoscience, but also studies particular topics and examines their scientific basis in some detail. It is aimed at a wide range of graduate students, not just those studying for the PSM in Nanoscience. *Core course for most Option 3 students, see Comment below

BCH 598 Biochemistry of Cancer (3 credits, elective, spring semester)An original literature-based course that investigates the key biochemical pathways that lead to cancer and the hallmarks that define it. Students develop presentation skills based on their research of both seminal findings as well as recent exciting discoveries.
NAN/EEE 598 Advanced Biosensor Concepts (3 credits, elective, spring semester)Advanced Biosensor Concepts and applications.
NAN/PHY 598 Topics in Biophysics 2 (3 credits, elective, spring semester)Structure, function and dynamics of biomolecular systems.
NAN/CHM 598 Bio-analytic Microfluidics (3 credits, elective, spring semester)Overview of microfabrication techniques; physical and chemical principles at the micro- and nanoscale. Discussions and student presentations of selected publications on analytical and bioanalytical achievements which have potential for real lab-on-a-chip systems.
BME/CME 598 Nano-Biotechnology (3 credits, elective, spring semester)To be completed

*Comment: Students with a Biochemistry or Life Sciences background should improve their Physics and Mathematics background during their first semester after consultation with the Program Directors. As noted above NAN/BCH 564: Bio-NanoTechnology may be a useful Fall option. In spring they should take NAN 544: Introduction to Nanoscience as their Core course, and only take NAN 571 (if at all) in the following Fall semester. 

As an interdisciplinary program, the PSM-Nanoscience program offers a variety of courses, including Special Topics (NAN 598) courses, contributed by different departments.
