4+1 (Accelerated Degree) Programs

Undergraduate students enrolled in several degree programs at Arizona State University may apply for admission to an Accelerated BS or BSE/PSM Program, typically known as a (4+1) program. Students are eligible to apply for admission when they have completed at least 75 semester hours in their current BS or BSE program. A cumulative GPA of 3.2 or better on a 4.0 grading scale is required at the time of application to the program.

Currently we have four such programs: Physics (PHY), Materials Science & Engineering (MSE), Chemistry (CHM) and Biochemistry (BCH) (with or without the Medicinal Biochemistry Concentration). Students interested in applying should consult the attached Information Sheet which is specific to their undergraduate subject, and submit a complete Pre-Application Form. When the Pre-Application is approved, the applicant will need to complete an online ASU Graduate Admissions Application for the PSM in Nanoscience Program.

The following supporting documents should be submitted to the Graduate College:

  • Personal Statement of Purpose
  • Two letters of recommendation from your Subject or Nanoscience faculty verifying the applicant’s readiness and probable success in completing the program
  • Transcripts
  • A personal interview with a member of the Admissions Committee may be required if additional information is needed to determine eligibility for admission to the program
  • Applicants to the BS or BSE/PSM are not required to take the Graduate Record Examination

Satisfactory academic progress requirements to remain in the 4+1 (Accelerated) Degree Program are outlined on the information sheet. Such students must complete all requirements for the Bachelor’s degree in their subject and the requirements for the PSM degree in Nanoscience. Once admitted to the 4+1 (Accelerated) degree program, continued enrollment is contingent on, but not limited to, the following:

  • Students must complete their Undergraduate degree with a minimum GPA of 3.2 within one year of being admitted to the 4+1 (Accelerated) degree program.
  • Students must achieve a minimum GPA of 3.0 at the completion of the PSM in Nanoscience degree requirements.

The attached Pre-Application form is for all these 4+1 Programs. Please indicate clearly which version you are applying for: Physics. Materials, Chemistry or Biochemistry/ (with or without Medicinal Biochemistry Concentration).

BSE Materials Science & Engineering

BSE Materials Science & Engineering

The 4+1 program BSE‐ Materials Science and Engineering / PSM – Nanoscience Degree is an accelerated degree for Materials Science and Engineering undergraduates who have a strong academic background and who are highly motivated to perform independent projects, either in research or in a more applied context in Nanoscience or Nanotechnology. The program is a dual enrollment program that is available to BSE majors who are in their Junior year (or 90+ credit hours) of the program and have a 3.2 GPA. The 4+1 program BSE‐ Materials Science and Engineering / PSM – Nanoscience is designed to obtain a bachelor’s‐to‐master’s (4+1) in one year after the completion of their bachelor’s degree. Students must complete all requirements for the Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering and all the requirements for the PSM degree in Nanoscience.

After being admitted into the program the student will follow the curriculum map below (may be modified with guidance of PSM advisor). The Accelerated BSE‐MSE/PSM‐Nanoscience Degree Program consists of 144 credit hours, with the PSM program being 30 credit hours:

The 4+1 program BS- Biochemistry/ PSM – Nanoscience Degree is an accelerated degree for Biochemistry undergraduates who have a strong academic background and who are highly motivated to perform independent projects, either in research or in a more applied context in Nanoscience or Nanotechnology.

The program is a dual enrollment program that is available to Biochemistry majors who are in their Junior year (or 90+ credit hours) of the program and have a 3.2 GPA. The 4+1 program BS- Biochemistry/ PSM – Nanoscience is designed to obtain a bachelor’s‐to‐master’s (4+1) in one year after the completion of their bachelor’s degree. Students must complete all requirements for the Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry and all the requirements for the PSM degree in Nanoscience.
